Tea ceremony

Tea ceremony (the way of tea) is one of Japan's traditional cultural practices,
and is the name given to a synthetic art
that encompasses not only the making of tea,
but also tea-room architecture,
the appreciation of tea utensils and bowls,
and Zen Buddhism.

It is not a religion, but a means to the study
of Japanese manners and spirituality.
Tea master Sen no Rikyu's aphorism
"WA-KEI-SEI-JAKU" (harmony, respect, purity and tranquility)
conveys the importance of the spirituality in tea ceremonies.

As you explore the ancient city of Kyoto, you will often see the beautiful doll-like maiko, or apprentice geisha, walking along the streets, over the picturesque bridges, and across the temple grounds. With their delicate makeup and colorful kimonos, they are simply picture perfect, and now you too can experience.

Gion Corner　

Gion Corner is a popular theater where tourists will be provided with short performances of 7 kinds of Japanese traditional arts and entertainment in single setting: Kyoto style Dance, Flower Arrangement, Tea Ceremony, Japanese Harp, Comic Play, Court Music and Puppet Play.

There is also a Maiko Gallery, where videos of dances, the hair decorations worn by maiko dancers, and other items are on display.

Everyday starting at 6:00pm and at 7:00pm
(From December till the second week of March, performances will be held on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays only.)

Performance guide
* Kyomai Dance
Originating in Kyoto, kyo-mai is an elegant and dazzling dance performed by maiko dancers in beautifully ornate dress.

* Flower Arrangement
The art of creating and enjoying arrangements made from flowers and other materials.

* Tea Ceremony
This is the stylized tradition of steeping and serving tea to guests. The Corner performs the “ryurei” style of the Tea Ceremony, seating on stools, for visitors from foreign countries not used to kneeling on tatami.

* Koto Zither
The koto is an ancient Japanese six-stringed zither traditionally played with ivory plectrums worn on the fingers, producing wonderful harmonies.

* Gagaku Court Music
Gagaku is the name for indigenous Japanese music and dance performed at the imperial court, shrines and temples. Gion Corner offers maigaku performances accompanied by dance.

* Kyogen Theatre
Kyogen is a form of theatre that portrayed life as it was in a comical manner.

* Bunraku Puppet Theatre
Bunraku, Japan’s traditional puppet theatre, was put on UNESCO’s list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003.

By Public Transportation

From JR Kyoto Station, take City Bus 206 or 100 to the Gion bus stop, and from there it is a 5-minute walk.

OR by train take the Keihan Line to Gion Shijo Station,and from there it is a 5-minute walk.

It is also a 10-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Line.
